Her 'Sewa' saved thousands hit by riots, closure of textile mills

Ahmedabad: In his essay Typhoon in Ahmedabad, renowned journalist Mark Tully highlighted the role of Self-Employed Women's Association (Sewa) helmed by Ela Bhatt and how it provided succour to the thousands rendered unemployed following the closure of textile mills in the 1980s. That was also a particularly turbulent period since riots and curfews were commonplace.
