Mumbai: The identity theft occurred a day after the police tweeted “Beware of fake profile fraud" on the @MumbaiPolice handle.
In the message, the fraudster asks for money saying he is stuck in a meeting at a remote location with limited possibility of making calls. The display picture is of Phansalkar, but the number from which the WhatsApp message is sent, +91 93296 03294, is not his.
The police have now removed Phanalkar's photo from their Twitter account profile. The fraudster asks the receiver to click on a link and proceed to buy an Amazon Pay e-gift card worth Rs 10,000. There follows an assurance of repayment by end of day.
