For the fourth consecutive time, a former India cricketer lost the presidential elections of the Mumbai Cricket Association. On Thursday, Amol Kale, a childhood friend of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, managed to pip India's 1983 World Cup hero Sandeep Patil by 25 votes-the final 'score' being 183-158-to become the new president of the MCA. Kale was the MCA vice-president in the last term.
The Nagpur man's victory looked assured since, standing for the top post from the powerful Sharad Pawar-Ashish Shelar Group, he received heavy political backing, with Fadnavis and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde addressing the voters twice when the group was canvasing for votes.
Though he lost the election, Patil added his name to a long list of famous cricketers who finished second best in the MCA presidential elections - in 1992, Madhav Mantri lost to Manohar Joshi, in 2001 former India skipper Ajit Wadekar lost to Sharad Pawar, and in 2011 Dilip Vengsarkar lost to Vilasrao Deshmukh.
