New Delhi: A study by Delhi Technological University (DTU) reveals that both age and mileage affect the emissions coming from a car, and “lenient testing norms” in India are possibly hiding the actual level of emissions from passenger cars.
The study, conducted over 18 months involving over 1,580 petrol cars in Delhi, has recommended considering mileage, too, as a standard for phasing them out. The data was collected from the tests for government-approved pollution under control (PUC) certificates. Currently, a petrol car in Delhi has to be discarded after 15 years — 10 years for diesel ones — while mileage is not considered as a norm for the phase-out.
