New Delhi/Ranchi: In an embarrassment for Congress, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha on Monday unilaterally announced its candidate for the Rajya Sabha election, despite pleas from the junior ally in the state that it cede the seat. The snub appeared to sting Congress as chief minister Hemant Soren had met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Saturday to resolve the issue a meeting which had raised hopes in the AICC that JMM would heed its request.
At a press conference, Soren announced Mahua Maji as the party candidate, steering clear of even the face saver for Congress by calling her an alliance choice. He said the name was finalised in a meeting with party founder Shibu Soren. Amid all-round shock in Congress that was optimistic about a change of heart in JMM, AICC state incharge Avinash Pande met Sonia Gandhi for a discussion. He is going to Ranchi on Tuesday to decide on the course of action.
