The Cabinet on Wednesday approved Rs 10,000 crore for the redevelopment of New Delhi, Ahmedabad railway stations, and Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The revamp of the stations have been on the government's radar since Lalu Prasad was railway minister with the Modi government also floating bids for private sector participation. Following the Cabinet decision, the modernization project, which will extend to Ahmedabad too, is targeted to be completed in 2026.
"The railways cater to the middle income, lower income, and middle class. We are creating the best facility with government investment. The best designs and construction techniques are being used to ensure that every passenger and our common citizen get world-class facilities created with investment from the Indian government so that there is no extra burden on passengers," railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a press conference. He also said it is a conscious decision to redevelop all these stations in the EPC (engineering, planning, and construction) mode and the investment will be made from the government budget.
