The Centre’s latest amend-ment to the guidelines for uplinking and downlinking of satellite TV channels in India has made it obligatory for channels to undertake “public service broadcasting” or telecast content in national and public interest on subjects of national importance for at least 30 minutes every day, reports Swati Mathur. The amended guidelines, cleared by the Cabinet, say “since airwaves frequencies are public property and need to be used in the best interest of society”, broadcasters are required to telecast content on socially relevant themes spanning education, health, etc.
