BJP wants to tackle the corruption in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, a body it has helmed now for 15 years, through the creation of a special squad. It also wants to improve the finances of the civic body through tax amnesty schemes. In an interview with TOI, Adesh Gupta, president of BJP’s Delhi unit, blamed Aam Aadmi Party for the funds crunch in MCD and Congress for the trifurcation of the civic body for political purposes. He asserted that BJP’s core vote of around 40% would see it through in the coming municipal elections.

Improving finances when MCD has Rs 8,500 crore pending in salaries/arrears and other liabilities

The main reasons for the corporation’s poor financial state was its trifurcation by Congress for political gains and Delhi government’s non-cooperation in releasing funds. After reunification, things have been streamlined and MCD will be in a better financial condition.
