How do you accrue big-game experience? On nights like these, it's when you let a big one slip right through your fingertips.
Jesse Marsch and Canada let a bronze medal, and $1 million (U.S.) in prize money, slip though theirs Saturday night in Charlotte, NC., living and dying by the sword. Uruguay came out on top as the thirdplace playoff went to penalties after 90 enthralling minutes, when Canada had fought back from 1-0 to lead 2-1 in injury time only to throw it all away. Captain Alphonso Davies and, cruelly, Ismaël Koné missed key kicks as Canada's Copa America odyssey ended on a losing note that didn't feel right at all.
With Koné turning in a dominant performance in the engine room, they'd rebounded from an early Uruguay opener from Rodrigo Bentancur and levelled things midway through the first half, Koné converting with a swagger. Thereafter they dominated, but that same infuriating inability to convert chances to scoreboard superiority persisted.
Marsch introduced front-line stars into the contest and it counted for plenty when Davies brought an injection of second-half energy. Fellow sub Jonathan David would pounce for what looked like the winner 10 minutes from time after another slaloming Koné run. But Canada stayed much too open and was punished with 37-year-old Luis Suarez plundering a trademark late equalizer to send us to penalties.
David and Moïse Bombito converted their spot kicks but Koné, of all people, stutter-stepped and saw his effort saved by Sergio Rochet. That piled on the pressure, and in the five spot Davies chipped his off the crossbar. Another lesson learned, unfortunately the hard way.
