Federal Health Minister Mark Holland said Wednesday that 120,000 people have received dental services under the plan and that he was working to ensure more providers would climb on board.
It’s a result of the unanswered questions oral health providers say Ottawa must resolve as the plan continues to expand, with those under the age of 18 and people with disabilities becoming eligible for dental coverage starting in June. An exact date to apply for the program has not been set.
A Star search of the participating providers listed by Sun Life — which manages the plan on behalf of the federal government — found that all of the association presidents who still practise dentistry (the head of Quebec’s provincial association has left his clinic) had yet to agree to join the program.
They’re part of the roughly two-thirds of the country’s estimated 30,000 oral health providers who have yet to sign on.
Dr. Brock Nicolucci, the head of the Ontario Dental Association, said he and his staff are not yet comfortable with the terms of the program but that he’s hopeful his concerns will be addressed.
Dr. Aaron Burry, the CEO of the Canadian Dental Association (CDA), said Nicolucci’s and others’ concerns have been shared with the federal government.
