At the Republican National Convention this week in Milwaukee, delegates are ditching the twirling bow ties of yesteryear for a new look: oversized ear bandages. The hospital accessory is a show of support for Donald Trump, after he came within a few microns of getting assassinated on live TV at a rally this weekend. That was scary.
The bullet grazed his ear, missed his head and put more wind behind his back.
After watching the shocking footage, I will say this about Trump: his instincts for image, stagecraft and showmanship are supernatural. If any of us were SHOT, the last thing we'd think is... photo op? This was his first thought. As Secret Service agents formed a protective circle around him, he thrust his fist with the clenched jaw defiance of a freedom fighter.
"Fight! Fight! Fight!" he bellowed, rivulets of blood trickling down his face.
It was an image for the ages. It was peak DJT.
And it could prove fatal for the Democrats in November.
Following the near-death experience, Trump made his first public appearance on Monday night. It was Day 1 of the 2024 RNC, a political Fyre Festival of carnival barkers and shameless liars. Trump was greeted with the rapturous applause once reserved for triumphant conquistadors. He was also wearing a bandage large enough to protect a flesh wound on the ear of a Bassett Hound.
