Twenty years of debate settled with new lighting law

There was relief in the cycling community after the release of new lighting laws in the UK. Who and what had to use what type of lights had seemingly been a source of debate between motorists and cyclists for some time. The Road Transport Lighting Act, 1927 stated "bicycles and tricycles not propelled by mechanical power, only a single lamp showing a white light to the front need be carried." All other vehicles had to have two lamps on the front. But the worry of cyclists was the rear light; thankfully they were spared this. "It shall not be necessary to carry a lamp showing a red light to the rear if the bicycle has attached an unobscured and efficient rear reflector."
