WIDE WHEELS

Testing wheels in isolation can be tricky. It's possible to comment on the ride quality, which may be good - but without the benchmark of near neighbours it's impossible to score them very accurately. That's why we've run this group test with seven pairs of similarly specified wheels ridden headto-head over the same terrain for the same amount of time and distance.

In order to make the comparisons as direct as possible, all wheels on test have 24mm or wider internal- width with carbon rims. The same tyres were used throughout: Pirelli 40mm Cinturato Gravel RC, which were run at 25psi on the front and 29psi on the rear.

Terrain was mixed, with some road and road-climb work, fire roads and rough tracks with some more technical sections thrown in. Total distance for each was 500-600km with additional break outs for some finessed head-to-head before arriving at a final decision.

On gravel, comfort is a defining feature and so I considered three levels of trail feedback and how the wheels dealt with each. 'Buzz' is regular surface 'noise' that's minimal and consistent in feel; 'chatter' refers to rougher, more uneven surfaces; and judder describes irregular trail features that are large enough to put you off your pedal stroke or deflect a wheel from its straight-line action.

It's no surprise that deeper rims tended to be stiffer while shallower types were more comfortable. Interestingly, though, light weight wasn't the be all and end all...

GANARY A COALMINE

The James Brown tune 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World' comes on the radio, filling the coach, and does nothing for my pre-event nerves as I sit surrounded by serious-looking, wiry, tanned men in Lycra. It's 6.30am, pitch black outside and I'm feeling very out of my depth as a relative newcomer to the world of clipless pedals and hurting for fun. Last night's stress dream involved being very unprepared to get married and being handed my great-grandmother-in-law-to-be's hideous silver dress with lace trim to wear minutes before the ceremony was due to start. I'll let you psychoanalyse that one.

Air Apparent - Pollution hasn't gone away. It's still there in every lungful, even if we can't see it in the air or on the news. But there are reasons to breathe easier, thanks to pioneering projects using cycling 'citizen scientists'. Rob Ainsley took part in one...

The toxic effects of pollution have been known about for years. 'Just two things of which you must beware: Don't drink the water and don't breathe the air!' sang 1960s satirist Tom Lehrer.Over recent decades, though, pollution has dropped down our list of things to worry about, thanks to ominously capitalised concerns such as Climate Change, AI, Global Conflict, Species Collapse, etc. That doesn't, unfortunately, mean the problem has expired. Air quality often exceeds safe limits, with far-reaching and crippling effects on our health.
