The 24-year-old, who has signed a five-year deal with the German club, was back with the Saints this year having starred on loan at Burnley last season.
The electric forward hit 19 goals as Vincent Company’s Clarets won the Championship title.
Tella joined the Saints’ academy from Arsenal when he was 17 and this year scored once in his three appearances amid speculation of a move.
Tella says seeing other players thrive in Germany was a big motivation behind the move to a club who reached last year’s Europa League semi-finals.
And he reserved special mention for the club that welcome him in six years ago.
