After a poor first half, Wigan thought that they had given themselves a survival lifeline when Charlie Hughes headed them in front in the 81st minute.

But they were condemned to League One next season when home substitute Yakou Meite slammed home from close range, after a goalmouth scramble, in the third minute of stoppage time.

With Wigan and Blackpool having been demoted, the third relegation slot is now between Reading, Huddersfield and Rotherham.

Reading have to visit Huddersfield on the last day of the campaign on May 8 – but they could be down before then if the Terriers and Millers pick up points from their games in hand. “We’re relying on other results now,” said interim boss Hunt. “And we’ll be keeping a close eye on them.
