IT WAS a result that sent shockwaves through European football – and a bunch of Championship stars played their part as Scotland claimed a famous 2-0 victory over Spain.

The Spaniards hadn’t lost a European Championship qualifier in nine years upon arriving in Glasgow, but a brace from Scott McTominay and a resolute defensive display sent the Iberian giants packing.

Manchester United midfielder McTominay understandably stole the headlines but it was Watford centre-back Ryan Porteous who wowed the pundits on Tuesday night.

Signed from Hibernian for a bargain £200,000 in January, the 24-year-old earned praise from Scotland legend Ally McCoist after impressing on his second international start in a 3-0 win against Cyprus last weekend.

And after keeping his place to face Spain at Hampden Park, Porteous turned in an heroic display of frontfoot defending that had his former Hibs boss Lee Johnson tipping a £20m transfer.

“Listen, I have sold players before and Ryan is as good as any of them,” said the former Oldham, Barnsley and Bristol City boss.

“Alfie Mawson for £5.5m, Lloyd Kelly £22.5m, Adam Webster £25m, Aden Flint £7m. All are centre-halves, so I have a really good concept of centre-halves, their value and how they can step in.
