“Uh oh,” Jackson smiled.
That Mauricio Pochettino couldn’t let the Argentine star keep his feet up all night, or those of £115m buy Moses Caicedo who later came on for the last 15 minutes, perfectly illustrated the corner Wimbledon had backed the Blues into.
Fernandez’s elite quality quickly showed even before he rolled in what proved to be the winner with a little under 20 minutes remaining.
But Pochettino was still concerned enough to introduce Caicedo as the League Two Dons looked to grab an equaliser on the break.
“Listen, we knew they were on the bench and, to be honest, their manager is probably hoping he doesn’t have to use them,” Jackson said.
“So it’s credit to my team that we got them to a position in the game where he’s had to make those changes. Bringing two £100million-plus players onto the pitch…that’s credit to us and how we made them approach the game obviously knowing that extra quality was coming onto the pitch.
“But the last ten, 15 minutes of the game, we’re pressing, we’re trying to counter and we had our moments. Certainly, we weren’t taking the defeat on the chin, we were trying to get at them. We had a couple of moments at the end where we might have done.”
