The ex-Norwich forward freely admits that a Papa Johns Trophy hat-trick just two weeks after his 18th birthday fooled him into thinking that he’d be able to score for fun at League Two level.
Including that treble for the Canaries’ Under-21s in a 5-0 triumph at Newport, Omotoye has netted five times in cup competitions during his fledgling career – opening his account for Rovers in their 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat against Portsmouth earlier this month.
But, ahead of yesterday’s home clash against Newport, the 20-year-old attacker had racked up 47 EFL appearances for Norwich, Swindon, Leyton Orient, Carlisle and Forest Green without finding the net.
Having gone close last weekend, though, when his goalbound effort was helped into the net by the merest of touches from predatory team-mate Matty Stevens to secure a 1-0 win at Harrogate, Omotoye is confident that his name can be a common feature on League Two scoresheets this term
