The U’s were only just outside the play-off places with ten games of the season left and would have fancied a stab at making the top seven.

However, a run of eight matches without a win heading into yesterday’s game at Colchester meant the U’s were becalmed in tenth place.

After winning the National League in 2020-21 and just missing out on the play-offs on their League Two bow last term, they would have loved to have taken the next step, but Gray is philosophical and doesn’t believe he needs to make a big overhaul of his squad this summer.

“Why would we need to make drastic changes?” he asked The FLP. “We’ve had an unbelievable few years and, even this year, I’ve been delighted with our season.
