WANDER with PRIDE

It WAS THE MONTH OF MARCH IN 2006, and autumn had gently caressed Sydney.
The weather was oscillating between a breezy 25°C and a chill 10°C when this writer sauntered into one of the city's historic locales, Oxford Street, and unknowingly walked right into the annual Mardi Gras Parade. Here, the city's-and possibly the world's-LGBTQ+ community gathered to partake in the bustling festivities, embodying a sense of gay abandon (pun intended).
Couples threw caution to the wind, embracing each other with renewed passion. It was a sight that could be unusual for someone yet to familiarise themselves with what a Pride parade is. And yet, it was an eye-opener, as it exposed you to the realities of those individuals who were forced to lead dual lives in other countries where same-sex relationships were still swept under the carpet.
SAFE SPACES, INCLUSIVITY, AND ADVENTURE
"Countries like Australia and Thailand have been proactive in promoting inclusivity through Pride events and targeted campaigns. Legal protections and a welcoming atmosphere make these destinations particularly attractive for LGBTQ+ travellers," reveals Bhawna Rao, curator and co-founder of Encompass Experiences.
Pride-related festivals are a major draw when deciding on travel destinations, opines Delhi-based businessman Gaurav Jain. "There are parties, parades, and everyone is in a great mood. This is also a great boost to local tourism," he adds. Jain married his Bengaluru-based spouse, fashion designer Raj Shroff, in 2021. "We hosted an intimate pre-wedding celebration with our friends, featuring traditional Indian functions in Udaipur. The legal status of homosexuality in the country of travel or where one opts to get married is of prime importance. We didn't want to be seen doing anything against the law of the land. That is why our legal wedding ceremony took place in Copenhagen."
