Check the 'owner's' profile, feedback and reviews, do a search on the property including photos (they could be lifted from other websites), ask detailed questions about location and check-in times, and don't be rushed into booking. Vague answers, unusually high deposits and bank transfer payments should set alarm bells ringing. Only ever pay via PayPal business or credit card. Report scams immediately to your bank and Action Fraud (actionfraud.police.uk).
