Why Does Alcohol Have More Effect When We're Flying?
At altitude, the air in an aircraft cabin is less dense than it is on the ground and this affects the way the body processes oxygen in the blood stream, explains clinical pharmacist Mike Wakeman.
"The aircraft cabin air is also drier, and this adds to the desire to drink more," he says.
"One drink in the air will affect you the same way that two or three drinks do on the ground, so it's advisable to limit your intake and drink plenty of water to counteract the dehydrating effects of the cabin air."
Should I Take LowDose Aspirin Before A Long Flight To Prevent a DVT?
Not unless you're prescribed it, says Dr Deborah Lee of Dr Fox Online Pharmacy (doctorfox.co.uk). "Experts have carefully reviewed the evidence and concluded that the risk of aspirin side effects which can include cerebral bleeding (in other words, a stroke) - outweigh any potential benefit in reducing DVT." It's far better to get up and move around, do calf exercises and drink plenty of water.
Am I More Likely To Pick Up A Cold Virus When Flying?
A Canadian study in the Journal of Environmental Health Research found that the "flight cold transmission rate would appear to be some 23 times that normally experienced by ground-level adult commuters". Low humidity and air conditioning on flights are seen as perfect conditions for cold viruses to be transmitted. Opt for a window seat to minimise contact with people walking along the aisle, sanitise hands regularly and wear a face mask if you wish.
