Speaking to journalist Tom about a royal reunion (below), Harry says “the ball is in their court”.
All he wanted was to share his story in his own words. Prince Harry says his explosive memoir Spare was never intended to hurt any members of his family, only to give him the chance to tell the truth about his life as the royal “spare” to the heir.
While he wishes it had never come to the point where sharing deeply personal insights was necessary, he says after 38 years of other people writing about him, he wrote his book because “it felt like a good time to own my story and tell it for myself”.
He’s certainly been frank in the 416 pages of Spare, including making a string of damning accusations against The Firm, such as claiming they’ve planted negative stories about him and wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex in the media and ignored pleas for help.
But now, as the dust is beginning to settle after the book’s publication and the headline-making interviews he did to promote it, Harry must be wondering, was it worth it?
General reaction from critics has been negative, ranging from “too much oversharing” to “you’re endangering the monarchy”. While some say Spare has induced compassion for Harry, US psychologist and fi lm producer Peggy Drexler says, “What we’re seeing is a little brother desperate to fi ght back against a lifetime of feeling inferior, but doing so in the dirtiest way possible.
