RAMSAY HUNT SYNDROME (RHS) is the name given to describe the symptoms of a rare shingles infection which affects the facial nerve, caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox in children.

Charles Nduka, consultant plastic surgeon and founder of charity Facial Palsy UK, explains, "You can only get RHS if you have had chickenpox.

"The virus that was dormant reactivates and causes inflammation that spreads to affect the facial nerve. Stress is often a trigger."

The main symptom is paralysis of one side of the face.

Charles says, "This can also happen with a stroke, so it's important to seek medical advice immediately.

"The main feature of RHS is severe one-sided pain, typically before the onset of the facial weakness.
