This Autumn sees the world braces for the forthcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland (October 31 – November 12), and so we at MEBN magazine hope this issue can give you a different perspective on something we see and use every day: water.
You have probably all seen the miracle that happens when the first rains arrive in our neighbourhoods, parks and gardens. Life returns and trees and plants bloom. However, with our changing climate, in many places across our fragile globe these rains are falling later or not arriving at all. In other places, heavier and more frequent periods of rainfall than ever before is flooding vast continents. This year’s storms, floods, droughts and wildfires are as clear a message as any that our climate has changed forever.
Not wanting to be alarmist, but every country needs to prepare NOW. With water, plans must be put into place to protect the water stored in our natural aquifers and wells and how we can make water safe to drink. We need to look at how much concrete we use in built up areas and make space for trees and floodplains. The water we use is so precious that assessing how much we actually need on a daily basis should be investigated, especially in the production of food and clothing.
It is time to call upon our leaders to build resilience when it comes to protecting this most important natural resources.
As usual, our eclectic mix of articles also takes a look at the importance of optimism and good humour, influencer marketing, how to attract wildlife and create your very own compost bin, and the power of our mindset. We also hear how one of the most technologically advanced dairy facilities in our region is changing the Palestinian dairy sector for the better.
