Welcome to Military Modelling Magazine, Volume 48, Number 5. Well, that’s two years gone in a flash and I’m finally feeling a little bit more settled. I like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have got behind us over the past couple of years and accepted changes with an open and enthusiastic mind; it really is appreciated, ladies and gentlemen.
This month, the model of the hour goes to one of those great supporters of the magazine, Malcolm Cuming, who has presented us with a wonderful bust of Horatio Nelson which adorns our cover. Inside, our lead article is an interesting mix of kits resulting in a cracking Berlin Brigade Chieftain ARRV by Ian Barraclough. Next comes the debut of Steve Jones, a very active contributor to the website, who presents us with a German captured CMP 60L followed by another unusual subject in the shape of James Langford’s Reichsbahn Skirted coach. Another debutant to the magazine is Charles Silverlight who presents an interesting article on Panther tank tracks; an example of a valuable feature that was destined to be posted on the website first. The popular Emmanuel Nouaillier continues his amazing work and this is followed by Peter Fearon’s superb Voltaire battleship, which is quite a contrast to his last contribution.

‘ON TRACK’ Show Report 2018

Welcome to Military Modelling Magazine, Vo 48, No 4, which is our annual 100-Page ‘Special’. This year we take a look at The Battle of Kursk, infamously known as the world’s largest tank battle, which took place 75 years ago this summer. In this issue we have focussed on the tank but we should also remember the hundreds of thousands of troops, artillery pieces, general support equipment and aircraft which took part in the long battle for a patch of land 150 miles long and 100 miles deep. Even with 100 pages to play with we can barely scratch the surface of this subject and other Kursk-related articles will appear later in the year in addition to these twelve articles. 
While we have included some familiar contributors to you, I am pleased to introduce no less than five new ones (to me at least) in the shape of Johan Augustsson, Sven Frisch, Kimmo Happonen, Alexander Wegner and Konstantinos Tsiompris. All of them are high class modellers and I hope that they will continue to produce work for Military Modelling in the future.

Welcome to Military Modelling Magazine, Volume 48, Number 2. This month’s issue begins with a classic build by Andy Evans featuring Bronco’s excellent US GPW Utility Truck. Often referred to as the ‘John Wayne Jeep’, because of the close resemblance to Wayne’s character, Lt Col Vandervoort in the classic war ‘The Longest Day’, Andy’s work takes centre stage on our cover. Also featured is Alex Clark’s incredible T-90A; incredible because I am still struggling to believe that this outstanding build is in 1/72! Another novel act this month is Ian Barraclough’s Landrover WMIK with its lifelike firing of a MILAN missile complete with sparks and flame. Further realism is conveyed in figure form with William Taits superb CGS and Verlinden diorama which will get you shivering with sympathy for these retreating French soldiers.
  A feature on painting artillery, dress regulations of the 1st London Rifle Volunteer Corps, a Kettenkrad walk-around and coverage of the ‘Festival of Models’ in Bordeaux are also crammed into this busy edition of your favourite modelling magazine.

Welcome to Military Modelling Magazine, Vol 48, No 2. Christmas is already a distant memory, you have finally sobered up after the New Year party and your finances are slowly returning to normal. We are already in February and the modelling calendar is beginning to fill, starting with a biggie on the 27th - Yes, it’s ‘On Track’ time again. 
As you can see from our front cover, we have something a little different to display and I’m sure it’s been while since a motorbike took such a position. It was purchased from Euro Miniature Expo last year and passed on to regular contributor, Gary Radford, who has made a grand job of building this Italeri 1/9 Harley Davidson; a real classic! Andrew Belsey follows inside with a masterclass on how to build a tent; not just any old tent but a hospital tent from the First World War out of tin foil. Emmanuel Nouaillier continues his hugely popular tutorials on ageing and our new contributor of the month is Gordon Fitz who presents an interesting Tamiya-TAKOM comparison using the T-55 as an example. John Norris continues his walk-arounds; this time looking at the unique Saint Chamond tank and this is followed by another cracking diorama by Doug Miller and Mick Burgin. Rog Merry completes his two-parter on making a Napoleonic period diorama and Kayhan Kayar rounds off the modelling with a nice build of a SA-6 missile system.

Welcome to Military Modelling Magazine, Volume 48, Number 1. A New Year brings, for many, the opportunity for a new start and this could apply to modelling as well if you are the open-minded type. For some, a dramatic change of course would be trying a new scale, a new technique or even a new genre. For me, last year, I not only took on a soft-skin for the first time but I also tried resin and a scale I had not tackled for a vehicle before – 1/24. What will I try this year for the first time? Something in metal maybe or even in wood? Both need to be explored so that I can develop an increasingly rounded experience of what modelling is all about. With this in mind, why don’t you try something different this year; it will do you good on so many levels.

Welcome to Military Modelling Magazine, Volume 47, Number 13. This, unbelievably, is the last issue of 2017! Since speaking to you last, I have managed to temporarily shake off the shackles which attach me to this keyboard and take to the road again, this time to Scale Modelworld at Telford. Unlike last year, this time I knew what to expect and the day developed into a round of meetings, catching up with people and putting faces to the names of those who have contributed to the magazine so far, rather than spending money I do not have on kits I don’t really need. 
  This month’s cover is a little different thanks to new contributor, Dustin Dias, he is backed up by some welcome returners to the mag in the shape of Nick Shuttleworth and Peter Fearon. Joe McCaslin carves an old favourite open while the ever popular Emmanuel Nouaillier presents some more of his incredible skills without any military connection. Contributions from Adrian Hopwood, John Ham and Ed Storey once again provide a diverse range of subjects which I trust should give the majority of you something to be happy about.  
  ‘Carry On!’ and Merry Christmas everyone.

Welcome to Military Modelling Magazine, Volume 47, Number 12. I shall begin with my now annual reminder that this magazine promotes and encourages a hobby, nothing more, nothing less. This is a hobby that brings people together from all over the world, people who share a common interest; while it is a fact that some are better at it than others, everyone also has the right to build what they want, how they want it! Some like to show their work off on websites, others are lucky enough to have it published in print while the majority of them simply build, paint and display for their own pleasure. Some modellers spend months researching and carefully preparing their bench for their next venture while others go to their local hobby shop, pick up a random kit and build it on the dining room table on a Sunday afternoon. My point is that there are no good or bad modellers – just modellers - and that’s just how it should be!
  This month sees a new section introduced; ‘Readers Showcase’ gives everyone of all standards and ages the chance to see their pride and joy in print. Just send your images to the e-mail below and at least a dozen per month will be selected for inclusion. Feel free to contact me on the e-mail below if you have an idea for an article.

Welcome to Military Modelling Magazine, Volume 47, Number 11. This magazine is fronted by a British heavy weight produced by another new contributor. Since writing to you last, myself and my ‘veteran’ designer Richard Dyer hit the road and headed south to the Kentish seaside town of Folkestone where we stumbled upon an impressive model show! I know, what you’re thinking; what were the odds? Of course, this was the ‘new’ Euro Miniature Expo which was held in the ‘old’ surroundings of the Leas Cliff Hall. Even though initially it felt like we were walking into another Euro Militaire, the lighter atmosphere and the generally upbeat feeling made it feel very different (for the better). The traders were far more positive for a start and this was reflected in the amount of positive encouragement and the samples that we struggled away with which necessitated a larger Atten-Shun this month. I truly hope that the new ‘team’ sticks with it and keeps this show going; it will grow, evolve and change but regardless of which direction it takes I for one know that it will not please everyone all of the time; in fact, it will be a bit like trying to run a modelling magazine!

Welcome to Military Modelling Magazine, Volume 47, Number 10, which, more by accident than design, contains the most articles so far during my tenure. 
So, what have we shoe-horned in this month? There are no less than eleven articles to choose from beginning with a Canadian Leopard by Michael Shackleton then Wouter Vrints operates outside of his comfort zone with a wrecked T-62. Keith Sharples finishes off his scratch-built Sherman; an article which is designed to encourage you to take up scratch building and to learn from some of the techniques he has applied to this project rather than focussing on the actual subject. The interesting little Shi-Ke tractor and Toby Knight’s Marder III follow and Ray Westlake continues his series about the 19th and early 20th Century engineers. A larger than life Zulu king is our figure of the month and Mike Bunn takes us back to modelling basics; this time looking at tools. There are two show reports; one on Tank Fest and one covering World Expo 2017 which sandwiches another thought provoking article by Ivan Cocker about weathering; inspiration really is all around us!

Welcome to Military Modelling Magazine, Volume 47, Issue 9, once again filled with a good range of subjects that should keep the bulk of you happy. Since speaking to you last month, I was fortunate to be able to visit Figureworld which is held annually in the lovely Northamptonshire town of Oundle. I only had a small amount of time there but it quickly became clear to me that the day could easily have been consumed with just talking to people. Within the space of a couple of hours, I had caught up with a few people I already knew and by the end had been introduced to two dozen more. It was really nice to be physically ‘out there’ and I know a number of you feel, like me, that the magazine should be ‘out there’ more too. Military Modelling does not at the moment have the presence that is required in a busy marketplace with regard to model shows. It worries me that a large number of people and especially those who visit the website who do not realize that there is a ‘real’ magazine behind the whole operation.

Welcome to Military Modelling Volume 47, Issue 6 which will land on your doormats a few days before the 73rd Anniversary of the D-Day landings. Across the globe, the media tends to focus only on the round numbers when it comes to anniversaries. Personally, I think we can all spare just a few minutes of our time to ponder on the major events in world history such as those that took place on the Normandy beaches. This huge logistical achievement has remained unsurpassed and, considering how clinical warfare works today, is likely to remain the largest seaborne invasion of all time. 156,000 men from 13 countries delivered by nearly 5,000 landing and assault craft and supported by nearly 300 escort vessels, unleashed against one common enemy on a single day in June 1944. Such an epic operation has left its mark on the landscape and I urge anyone interested in military history (who hasn’t already done so), to jump on a ferry and immerse yourself in one of the greatest operations of all time.

Welcome to a ‘Special’ version of Military Modelling Volume 47, Issue 4 which on this occasion focusses on the 75th Anniversary of the Battles of El Alamein. As we all know, it was a crucial, tide-turning campaign which saw the Allies suddenly step from the back foot to the front.  
  Even with a mag this size there is so much more I wanted to include such as the artillery, the multiple soft-skins and diverse range of armoured cars, half-tracks and light vehicles that were involved in the colossal toing and froing conflict which, by the time it had come to an end, had lasted for nearly three years. In that time, the Axis forces had dominated the bulk of Europe and North Africa and by the end were retreating and defending on all fronts. It really was one of the most important theatres of war during the Second World War and the sacrifice made by British, Australian, New Zealand, South African, Indian and Greek troops, not to mention the equally high losses for the German and Italian forces, should never be overlooked.

Welcome to Military Modelling Volume 47, Issue 3 another magazine filled with a large range of modelling subjects, not all of them military. This month we have a couple of new contributors, a few from the past and some regulars as well. Our lead article is by Fraser Gray who presents his lovely Takom Whippet which picked up some metal ware at Euromilitaire last year. Next, as a result of popular demand is another ‘how to’ article, this time by Mark Cooper and Mark Bannerman, on the art of scratchbuilding, which I’m sure we can all learn from. The ever popular Emmanuel Nouaillier follows and Yngve Sjodin returns with an Estonian Front diorama. Something a little different from a figure point of view is brought to the table by Victor Wong and keeping ‘on trend’ with the ‘how to’, Neil Marshall sorts the hair out on a Sean Bean lookalike and Richard Wilson returns with his cracking Militant. Richard Dyer’s enthusiasm for Rubicon’s 1/56 machines continues and new contributor Robert-Gilles Martineau takes a look at the Japanese model capital, Shizuoka City.

We begin a New Year with Vol.47 No.2 issue of Military Modelling Magazine continues on the same diverse route that we embarked on several months ago, we begin this month’s magazine with something a little different in the shape of a Soviet armoured train. Rail has not featured a great deal in the past and, just like aviation I’m sure it will have its critics although maritime seems to have completely slipped under the radar without any criticism at all (cue, angry subscriber putting pen to paper!) It should be quite clear by now that Military Modelling is heading back to its broad spectrum roots. More articles will be appearing which will aim to encourage new people into the hobby and to inspire the ‘old’ to take on new subjects in more ambitious ways. What has puzzled me from day one is how popular Emmanuel Nouaillier’s articles are considering is there is no hint of ‘military’ in any of them. They bring so much to the table without using a military subject to demonstrate effects and it is pleasing that it is so well received even when some military subjects are not.

Vol.46 No.13 issue of Military Modelling Magazine rounds 2016 off packed to the gunnels with a diverse range of subjects. The lead article is an outstanding diorama featuring a Panhard 178 on rails complete with a wintery feel followed by some modification work to a Dragon 1/35 StuG III Ausf.G. Another diorama, this time featuring an old classic also deservedly features on the front cover in the shape of Radek Pituch’s M4A3 Sherman. Our, now monthly figure feature has a familiar Hollywood face and the first of two articles which commemorates the 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor follows. The first is an excellent rendition of the USS West Virginia in 1/700 before she was damaged on December 7, 1941 followed by a US Navy Grumman Wildcat which has been exposed to help keep the creative juices flowing.

Vol.46 No.12 issue of Military Modelling Magazine is the annual Euro Militaire Special. Expanded to 84 pages, the magazine presents a well-balanced review in pictorial form of this still popular show. All of the major award winners are listed, although it would need a considerably bigger magazine to include images of every single model. This issue is very free flowing from a design point of view, broken down into large sections led by the Major Award Winners. Best of Show, Charles Davis Memorial Award, The Great War Trophy and the Mike Taylor Memorial Trophy all, deservedly, have their own sections.

This month's front cover star looks more like something from a SF film than a WW2 military vehicle! In our lead feature Mark Bannerman describes how he built and painted Takom's 1:35 scale kit for this most unusual looking armoured car. 
For diorama fans Steve Zaloga scratchbuilds a Normandy Ringstand with a 50mm pedestal gun and includes some fascinating period photos as reference. 
Mac McConnell then completes his Xact 1:35 scale Soviet T80U MBT kit project with the painting and weathering stages plus the addition of a small base. 
Next Andy Belsey has more of his truly amazing 1:285 diorama pieces, this time depicting World War One artillery.
