What is “art”? Is it limited to the arrangements of forms, sounds, and shapes into things like paintings and music? Or can we also count the labours of crafts that put as much emphasis on function as they do on form? How about creative expressions that are commercial in nature – those that are meant to aspire and not only inspire? On this occasion, rather than wax philosophical, I’m inviting you, our dear readers, to see the stories of a wide range of figures who occupy diverse slots in the realm of creativity. In a way, this is a themeless edition of Prestige Indonesia; the personalities we’ve chosen to feature come from various, seemingly unrelated backgrounds. Still, there’s a common thread in that they elevate the lives of so many people in incredibly imaginative ways... Representing the more accepted definition of artist we have painter Evi Pangestu, who describes herself as being a “rebellious” person and specializes in the rather abstract field of conceptual art. For craftsmanship that is both technical and artistic, we have an interview with Augustin de Buffévent, creative director of Fauré Le Page– a unique French luxury brand that once produced luxurious firearms for nobility and now produces luxurious bags and leatherworks, and has recently arrived in Indonesia. Then we have another creative director, Felix Tjahyadi, known for his window displays for Hermès boutiques – works that are at once commercial and imaginative. Finally, for the performance arts we have rising actress Shenina Cinnamon – a fiercely vocal rising star who is now making waves in the film industry. On their own, each story might be inspiring – and they’re certainly enjoyable. Considered as a series, there is a larger story about how every form of artistic expression has merits that anyone can appreciate, depths that anyone willing can delve into, and values that, perhaps, we all can learn from.
