Summer has always been a period of travel and outdoor activities as the sun envelopes us with warmth, freedom and happiness. Countries blessed with four seasons enjoy the longest days of the year, while folks like us in Singapore find it another long day to get by. With that in mind, we explore the theme of “Movement” in the June/July ’25 issue. It is one of the constants in our lives — planets orbiting, air flowing into our lungs, a pulse that drives us forward, propelling how we live, dress, travel and evolve as individuals, communities and societies. As the seasons go by, we mark them by checking milestones of growth and shifting trends as the momentum of life pushes us forward, literally and figuratively. In this issue, the theme of “Movement” is captured across the sections, from fashion’s ebb and flow to a watch’s constant ticking of time. Living in a moment of uncertainty and looming economic depression, we are reminded again of the essentials in our lives: to acknowledge and segregate our needs from our wants. Fashion, long a frivolous facet of life, is ostensibly disposable in the face of despair and social upheaval, but fashion always finds a way to remain relevant. I leave you with a quote from legendary American fashion photographer Bill Cunningham in the 2010 documentary Bill Cunningham New York, “Fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life. I don’t think you could do away with it. It would be like doing away with civilisation.”
