This is a sorry time for art, as the market is very sluggish. There are few buyers; artists aplenty. The
galleries are displaying but art lov- ers are a few; the artists are enthusiastic but not matched by
transactions. However, the only bright part is that it has not been able to disillusion the artist who is still
gung-ho about creating more. The festive season brings in its wake some great and some not-so- great
things. It inflates the spending budget of many, but art is way down on their list. Some galleries are
displaying stupendous work, exposing budding talent, but the number of takers is abominable. It can play
on the morale of the first time exhibitor; the seasoned artists are aware of the ups and downs of
the industry. Not only do they understand the wheel, they know the exact pulse of the market, so they
remain undeterred. The low time is sometimes a good time to create without stress. Many artists have
created their best works when they were going through a glum phase. Not to say that there is no
anxiety, but there is no time constraint either. He has to make best of the situation. And as the wheel turns, the global market picks up, the local market stabilizes and the sales become abundant. An accomplished artist flows with the tide, lie low when the time demands and confidently there when the same time favors them. The only criterion is that his creativity should not wane. Time and tide favour the patient and the persistent.
