It’s amazing how strong the desire to talk about the past becomes when you get older. I’ve been driving for more than 65 years and a number of things have happened to me that may be worth recounting.
My first serious motoring error was to select first gear to start the engine while some helpers pushed the car. When I let out the clutch, two teeth broke inside the rear axle. I knew that one should use second gear because the lower numerical ratio implies that the driveline will experience less of a shock when the wheels start to rotate the engine, but I didn’t think the use of first gear would cause any damage. Lesson learnt.
