YEARS ago, I was working in TV production with a flinty Kiwi as a boss. Kate was kind with an excellent sense of humour, but she didn’t suffer fools gladly. It was her remit to manage the young staff– mostly in their twenties and thirties – while keeping a firm hold on the company purse strings.

TV production can be a tricky business and money was a touchy subject for Kate, who spent her days and nights squinting over the accounts in one of those special chairs people kneel on when they suffer from bad backs.
