Endurance Review After Ineligible Horses Entered

The British governing body has admitted that the problem is more widespread than was originally thought

ENDURANCE GB (EGB) is reviewing an undisclosed number of historic ride results after admitting that unqualified and unregistered horses have been participating “over many years”.

Last week officials were briefed by EGB director Esther Young, whose memo said it is a “wider issue than first thought”.

EGB is tightening entries procedures, especially for visiting foreign riders; the revival of the Euston Park competition under Dubai patronage in 2016 means riders from scandal-hit UAE stables are again based in East Anglia this summer.

Miss Young told officials overseas competitors had been competing without log books or registrations. She wrote: “This is against our rules — no one’s fault, as it has just become custom and practice… but it is not right and it makes it nigh on impossible to check the horse’s eligibility.”

A FEI spokesman said it was in “regular contact” with EGB about this, and expected all ineligible results to be “downgraded to a completion or annulled”.
