Seven-year-old Donald III has not beaten the clock across country in 11 outings, but such was his dominance in the first phase — his dressage score of 22.3 was streets ahead of the opposition — that he still won despite racking up six time-penalties.
“He’s completely German and running does not come as default,” explained Sue, who bought the compact 15.1hh gelding by D’Olympic three years ago.
As well as speed issues, Donald’s fervent dislike of jump decorations had also kept him off the podium.
