The Artist Reveals How She Paints the Natural Light of the Passing Seasons in Her Home Studio and Garden in Camberwell, London.
In November 2016, you had a solo exhibition at Purdy Hicks Gallery in London, accompanied by a monograph. Did you take a short break afterwards?
No. I had been looking forward to getting back to painting without distraction. It was a dry winter and I began a big painting outside. Despite the cold, many aspects of working outdoors are easier in the winter.
When you work outdoors, do you finish your pictures in the studio?
Painting becomes interesting when I have an open mind about how it will look. When I have found a way to respond as directly as I can to what I see, brush in hand, I try to convey what I find. I bring the painting in to judge its strength as an independent object. I might make adjustments, but only in this sense would it be finished away from the motif.
