JASON DEMELLO started version 1.0 of DeMello Off-Road with just $500 in his one-car garage. He then promptly got kicked out for welding and chop-sawing sliders and bumpers. But we’re getting a little ahead of our selves here.

To understand why DeMello Off-Road products for Toyota trucks and SUVs are so unique and in demand globally, you first have to understand the drive of its founder, Jason. As a kid, he was always taking things apart to figure how they worked. Ask his mom and she’ll tell you several stories about young Jason and his autopsies of the family fan, or how he would use old calculators as computers for his G.I. Joe.

As he got older, cars became his focus, as well as dirt bikes and dune buggies. “Anything with a motor, I had a passion for,” Jason explained. A teacher in high school gave him old car magazines to read; he absorbed them. “I could tell you every car’s 0-60 in those magazines, and what horsepower they had. I was really in tune with that and enjoyed learning about that stuff.” But you can blame Back to the Future and the movie’s famous pickup for his new focus: “When I was a kid, the movie’s Toyota was my dream car. When I was able to buy my first new truck, I bought a brand-new Tacoma. As I got older, I became a Toyota fanatic.”
