CAN WE TRAVELERS ADAPT IN THE TIME OF A PANDEMIC?
Adventure Motorcycle (ADVMoto)|July - August 2020
Being housebound in a small apartment in a random town during a pandemic with expired visas and a half-dead scooter in a country that until recently Wikipedia had under the category “Third World,” is not exactly the ideal situation. And it’s more than obvious that this part of our journey is not what we originally had in mind. However, this is how things are at the moment (April 2020) and no one knows how or when it’ll be over.

CAN WE TRAVELERS ADAPT IN THE TIME OF A PANDEMIC?

The CV19 pandemic has brought many serious changes to the world, changes likely to bring about a paradigm shift in the way we live. And in these interesting times, our thoughts often fly into areas we never had the opportunity to think about as deeply.

One of these is our place in the world and the loss of certainty, including how this will affect travel. We’ve been on the road almost full time since 2013, and if there’s something it has taught us it is this lack of certainty. We’re not certain about the route, the weather, where we are going to be the next day, the people we are going to meet, or anything. And because of this constant uncertainty, we’ve learned to adapt. It’s not easy, but the ability to adjust to various environments and circumstances is something that can be learned, and we, as travelers, are privileged to have these kinds of opportunities.

CHASING PEAKS IN THE HIMALAYAS

It was 2:00 a.m. on my fourth day in India. My eyes blinked open in the dark of a hotel room in Drass, a town in the Himalayas on the Indian side of the border. Yesterday was our first day riding on a six-day trip through the Himalayas, and my brain could not process everything I'd seen and experienced.

MAKING MEMORIES

Kevin and I initially met in the Marines. We have been riding together for a few years, and riding BDRs the entire time. Our first attempt at a BDR was in Utah, where we were completely unprepared and significantly ignorant of our capabilities. It led to some interesting moments conquering Lockhart Basin where we developed our backcountry motto: “Less Gear and More Water.” We document our rides on our YouTube channel, “Be Gone for Good.”
