Triumph SA took a slightly different approach to this launch with a very much relaxed atmosphere, hosted along the banks of the Hennops River at River Place Lodge in Hartbeesport.
Open card discussions were held involving Triumphs present situation in SA, plans for the future and of course some technical aspects of the bikes we would be riding on the day. This kind of dialogue was refreshing as it gave a realistic look at the difficulties facing the South African and for that matter the World’s motorcycle industry due to a steady decline in motorcycle sales year on year in the above 500cc category across all manufacturers. Despite this, Triumph SA’s Bruce Allen seems upbeat that the brand is regaining momentum in SA through a carefully selected product line-up and excellent after sales service. He also reassured us that although the “New” Triumph SA has not expanded beyond Gauteng into other provinces Shorter riders will appreciate the low seat height of 807mm.
Contrary to its name the Speed Twin is by no means mind blowing fast however the lack of wind protection is actually a good thing. Exposure to the elements and rush of wind make it an exciting ride. The sense of speed is heightened somewhat, hence there is no need to push beyond acceptable limits to reach the thrill zone.
The roads around Harties have deteriorated in recent times and have been known to unsettle some racier orientated speed bikes on their sporadic Sunday morning dash to the dam. The Speed Twin soaked up those bumps comfortably. KYB forks with cartridge damping and twin KYB rear suspension units with adjustable pre-load do the job just fine.
