Shah Rukh Khan, a connoisseur of great watches, black tuxedos and books, opens up about his preferences and his possessions.
People often ask what luxury means to me. It isn’t easy for me to define luxury. Is it the independence I have to do the work I love — act and make movies? Or is it the choices available to me? Is it the time I spend with my family? Is it the love for the people I care about? I have never defined luxury solely in materialistic terms.
The one possession I am absolutely proud of is my house in Bandstand, located in the most beautiful part of Mumbai. I come from a regular middle class family and to be able to buy this palatial villa is an experience that I can’t yet live down.
I own a wardrobe full of black jackets and suits from every brand you can think of — Giorgio Armani, Brioni, Hugo Boss and Gucci. My collection of over a 100 tuxedos is all black; most jackets are double breasted. I am not really experimental and black never lets me down. And I practically live in my jeans from 7 For All Mankind.
I personally don’t keep abreast of trends or follow fashion. I don’t intend to ever try and make a statement with what I wear. I wear Indian couture on occasions, and an embroidered white kurta worn with blue denim is sheer luxury.
