Pregnancy tracking apps, a virtual health clinic for women, and a device for accurate, early-stage breast cancer detection are among the latest innovations in the Indian femtech space. When it comes to FemTech companies, India is Asia’s undisputed leader - accounting for nearly 5 percent of the total number of femtech companies and beating other Asian countries by a significant margin. In 2016, the term femtech - which refers to a category of products addressing women’s health or wellbeing issues - was coined by Ida Tin, founder of the period-tracking app Clue. Being relatively young, the femtech industry remains largely unexplored. We have “only scratched the surface and there is still a long way to go,” according to Adarsh Natrajan, founder of Aindra Systems, a Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup that has developed a smart artificially intelligent screening system that detects cervical cancer at an early stage. “Femtech has a lot of scope in India,” believes Padmaja Ruparel, president of the Indian Angel Network (IAN), one of the country’s largest angel funds, adding that women are 50 percent of the population and have unmet needs.
