The 12 major Indian ports handled 439.66 million tons (mt) of total traffic during April-November period of 2017, about 3.46 percent higher than 424.95 mt recorded during April-November, 2016, according to data released by the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
Movement of iron ore through the major ports showed a rise of 8.8 percent during April-November, 2017. The major ports together handled 28.95 mt of iron ore during April-November, 2017 compared to 26.61 mt handled in the corresponding period of 2016.
Paradip Port handled the highest volume of iron ore, at 7.59 mt, during April-November, 2017, against 6.17 mt handled during April-November, 2016.
Thermal coal handling by the major ports was down 9.02 percent during April - November, 2017. Movement of thermal coal through these ports decreased to 57.48 mt during April-November, 2017, compared to 63.18 mt achieved in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
The major ports handled a total of 32.84 mt of coking coal during the period of April-November, 2017, up 2.27 percent compared to 32.11 mt during the same period last year.
