Mixing the contemporary with the ancient is not something many can do with ease, but these new-generation jewellers have an alchemist’s power in carving out pieces that are youthful, vibrant and above all, pragmatic
As the world keeps trudging forward through good times and bad, the ones who hold the mantle are the young. The jewellery sector is no different. Young jewellers are slowly joining legacy businesses with their own ideas and ambitions. Interestingly, much of this aspiration is founded on a deep and instinctive understanding of their own peer group and the perceived lacunae in the jewellery sector.
The Retail Jeweller identifies a clique of young jewellers, who may come across as audacious, but are sure-footed and ready to explore uncharted territories based on a foundation built with sound judgment and an approach fraught with common sense.
Each of these entrepreneurs takes great pride in carving a unique niche for themselves by creating a new brand proposition that is far removed from the legacy businesses that serve as incubation centres for their fledgling brands. These brands underline the intrinsic ability of the young generation to think beyond the ordinary and create value for consumers.
Two of the three brands featured here germinated from a mere idea and slowly bloomed into full-blown brand offerings during the period of pandemic that have seen some initial success already. Another that we highlight here has been around for over six years, and seen considerable growth and success.
Despite the niche target segment and limited scale of operation, each brand stands out for its clear strategy and market-focussed approach, which is bent on discovering the needs of consumer, and then evolving the brand as a solution to those needs.

HUID: India's quest for GOLD PURITY EXCELLENCE
The Indian gold jewellery sector’s journey towards hallmarking has been long, slow and bumpy. Although voluntary hallmarking became available in April 2000, compromised gold was still widely sold in the market — a fact of which neither public nor government was ignorant. In June 2021, however, hallmarking became mandatory. Manufacturers, jewellers and consumers now must quickly come to grips with the new purity norms, which juxtapose a unique six-digit ID for each item with the utterly inadequate state of India’s hallmarking infrastructure. The Retail Jeweller weighs the pros and cons of this sharp turn in the current, mid pandemic moment, when the gems and jewellery industry is more dependent than ever on gold sales.
