The Code of Law star on bending the rules in the Ch 5 varsity drama Faculty and his admission into a different kind of bar.
8 DAYS: In Faculty, you play David Chang, a popular, funny and charismatic lecturer in a private university. How did you prepare for the role?
KEAGAN KANG: Well, everybody has some sort of university or college experience, and I drew from my own. [I focused not so much on] the technical aspects of being a professor or a lecturer, but the [moral] character [of David]. He’s sort of like a playboy and he has ambiguous relationships with his students. I had a really cool teacher in high school in Australia, and he taught the media course, which is what I’m teaching on the show. He’s a cool guy that all the guys liked, and all the girls always flirted with. He’s very handsome, he’s got that kind of swag. I modelled my character after him.
Let’s talk about this “ambiguous relationship” David has with his students.
There are a lot of these things that do happen in [actual] teacher-student relationships that are kept secret. There’s a moral code of conduct that one shouldn’t cross the line. Even in everyday life, there are lines and these lines are sometimes blurred. There are grey areas all the time where it’s hard to resist temptation. It’s just the thought of it in your head, but physically playing it out is another thing altogether. My character goes through this struggle (laughs).
