8 DAYS: Your rapping has been compared to Missy Elliot and Nicki Minaj. Do you think you’re similar to them?
MASIA ONE: It’s wonderful that my rapping has been compared to these female emcees as they are both ground-breaking innovators. I worked in urban music internationally at a time where no one looked or sounded like me. So I relate to the struggles and strength of these women who had to distinctly forge their own path. That said, I am a Southeast Asian woman, not a black woman. My style, slang, culture and physical appearance are distinctly different from these artists. Therefore, my output is unique from their sound.
You grew up in Singapore but moved to Canada when you were eight. Rapping is a very uncommon career choice for a Singaporean. Why did you decide to be a rapper?
