Playing safe is not Sayani Gupta’s forte. Rather she revels in the dark, the edgy and the gritty. That’s why perhaps she chose to play a blind lesbian in Margarita With A Straw, superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s assistant in Fan, Sidharth Malhotra’s and Katrina Kaif’s bestie in Baar Baar Dekho and a pregnant woman, who commits suicide in the recent satire Jolly LLB 2.

Her performance as Hina Siddiqui, a young Muslim woman, who’s driven to despair and suicide, was the poignant turning point of Jolly LLB 2. She pushes Akshay Kumar’s character, Jolly, to seek redemption. Sayani says it was tough to internalise her character’s grief and make it her own. She was terrified of her confrontation scene with  Akshay Kumar. “As a person, I don’t cry often. I don’t show my emotions easily. So when it came to my character Hina, I had to pitch it correctly and be effective. It had to affect me, everyone around me and of course those who watched me,” she says.
