Devesh Sharma profiles Vinod Khanna, the ultimate macho star who passed away recently.
YOUNG VINOD
Vinod Khanna was born into a business family in 1946 in Peshawar (now in Pakistan). His father, Kishanchand Khanna, dealt in textiles and dyes and the actor had three sisters and one brother. The family moved to Mumbai shortly after Partition. He studied in various prestigious schools in Mumbai and Delhi, before finally being sent to Barnes School in Deolali near Nashik for his final years of schooling. He was said to be an excellent student, an avid boxer and hockey player.
One story from his school life points towards his independent streak.
Apparently, the boys had to complete their meals strictly within 15 minutes. But young Vinod once protested saying he was hungry and would eat till he was full, considering his father was paying for the food! It was during his days at Barnes that he watched the epic Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and fell in love with the movies. He later graduated with a commerce degree from Sydneham College, Mumbai.
