In your career as an Ayurvedic doctor, what have you found to be the root cause of most diseases?
“I think the major cause of diseases today is one’s own mind. There is a serious increase in various emotions like anger, envy, jealousy, hatred, intolerance, greed, and lust which is leading to auto-immune diseases, the most rampant malady affecting us. Auto-immune diseases are physical diseases which are basically manufactured in the mind. Lifestyle changes such as eating junk food as well as erratic eating and sleeping timings are the second common cause for diseases. For example, the liver corrects itself from 10:30 pm to 1:00 am. One should be fast asleep during that time. Lack of quality sleep eventually leads to liver and digestive diseases. Every second person these days has a gastric problem. The third major reason for diseases is lack of physical activity. In the olden days, women did chores like manually grinding, pounding and washing clothes which kept their gynaecologic health in perfect place. Gynaecological issues such as PCOD and other issues related to conception are on the rise and this is mainly because of a sedentary lifestyle and junk food. Women need not go back to grinding grains but a strict exercise regimen is very important. In men, you see diseases like obesity, diabetes and cholesterol which are related to the lack of physical activity.”
