WHY GO THERE?
History, tempting food, shops and culture – York has it all. The city centre is compact enough for you to leave your car at your hotel, yet offers enough to ensure you never run out of options. Star of the show is York Minster, the grand cathedral completed in 1472. But don’t overlook The Shambles. Some of the street’s overhanging timber-framed buildings date back to the 14th Century. No wonder it’s rumoured to be the inspiration behind JK Rowling’s Diagon Alley. There are even several Potter-themed shops there to please would-be wizards!
