With her huge hair, gravelly voice and catalogue of power ballads, it’s safe to say Bonnie Tyler is one of the rock legends of our generation.
She had global success with hit singles Total Eclipse Of The Heart and Holding Out For A Hero in the 80s, and is still touring decades later for her loyal fan base.
On top of her professional success, Bonnie found long-lasting love – she’s been married to husband Robert Sullivan, 71, for nearly 50 years.
And when the star, who turns 70 this year, calls us for a chat, she tells us she’s even been thriving during the recent lockdowns – she’s been in the Algarve since last March, where she has managed to gain a new skill.
“At the age of 69 I’ve learnt to swim in our pool,” she says in her husky voice. “It took me long enough!”
Here, the Welsh star reveals the secrets behind her enduring marriage and tells us about her latest album…
Are you looking forward to celebrating your 70th birthday this year, Bonnie?
I can’t say I’m looking forward to it [laughs]. It will only be me and Robert. Even if it did all go back to normal I wouldn’t want to do anything big. If it was for Robert, I’d get a big marquee with loads of people, but I’m quite happy to have a nice dinner with a bottle of champagne. I’m supposed to be on the road touring by June, so if we can all get out there again I’ll be celebrating with my band and crew, which will be great. They’re like my second family. Most of them have been with me for over 30 years.
Have you got anything in mind for your birthday present?
