While it was her “rather smart” custom golf buggy that made headlines when the Queen visited the Chelsea Flower Show last week, it was Her Majesty’s beaming smile that caught the eye of her former press secretary, Dickie Arbiter.
“Didn’t she look wonderful? She looked radiant and she has every reason to!” he exclusively tells OK! “She’s alive, her mind is razor-sharp. If she can get out and about then my goodness she will do it! She loves being among her people.”
The 96-year-old monarch was pretty in pink on the day, accessorising her fuchsia coat with a floral Cartier brooch, a gift from her mother and father on her 19th birthday.
Ahead of her appearance, a spokesperson said, “Adjustments have been made for her comfort” – a reference to the £62,000, six-seater golf buggy complete with a chauffeur that transported the monarch around Chelsea's displays.
Dickie says, "Of course, she'd have rather walked but that golf buggy was rather smart, wasn't it? Chelsea is one of her favourite events of the year and marks the start of the summer season and she wouldn't have missed it unless she absolutely had to." Dickie also reminds us that though the Queen's mobility is becoming an issue, her mind is razor-sharp. "Yes, she has a couple of problems standing and getting out and about but she is still perfectly capable of fulfilling her duties," he says.
