What according to you is necessary to make a mark in the industry - a glamorous face or acting skills?
As an actor, nurturing and developing skill has been the most important part of my journey. Glamour and aesthetics are transient and do not sustain a career so while they are important, they have always been peripheral to the actual work itself - which is all about performance.
How did Begum Jaan come your way? What was your reaction when you bagged this role?
Director Srijit Mukherjee sent me the script to read after he was introduced to my work. I loved the setting of the film, the storyline and the character of Gulabo. The opportunity to be part of the story that was so gripping and to play a role as challenging as a sex worker in a period drama meant that I was ecstatic when I was offered the role.
How was the experience of working with Vidya Balan?
I have always looked up at Vidya Balan - both the actress and the person. Whenever I have met her in the past, she has always exuded an elegance and humility which is so rare in someone who possesses her kind of stardom and acting prowess. This was only heightened while shooting with her. I was fortunate to share screen space with her in some very intense scenes. She is a generous actor and gave me immense respect as a co-actor. For this , I will always admire her.
